「What’s up?」
と言われたことはありませんか?
友達同士で使う、優しい挨拶です。
誰かがあなたに「what’s up」と言うとき、「あなたは私の友達」というメッセージが含まれています。
あなたの答え方次第で、友情の気持ちを返し、距離を縮め、相手と仲良くなる絶好のチャンスです!
でも言われたとき、どう答えたらいいのでしょうか?
答えは簡単なのですが、多くの日本人がよく間違えるところです。
今回のコラムでは、あなたが
自分の言い方が自然かどうか悩まずに済み、
優しい気持ちを伝えて会話をスムーズに続けるために、
「what’s up」への自然な答え方をご紹介します。
まずは、どの「what’s up」のこと?
以前のコラムでは、
単語・フレーズの元となっているイメージ、感覚、メッセージ(コトバの本質)
をご紹介しました。
同じ単語・フレーズなのに、場合によって伝えるコトバの本質が違うことがよくあります。
What’s upでもそうです。
場合によって、「what’s up?」が意味するメッセージが2つあります。
友達同士で挨拶する「whats up」
と
相手の様子を尋ねる「what’s up」
このコラムでは後者の場合について説明します。
Whats up?の実際の意味
「What’s up」の自然な答え方は、フレーズを直訳するとすぐわかります。
「What’s up」の直訳は
「what are you doing?」
(何をしているの?)
です。
「What are you up to?」に似ています。
挨拶の「what’s up」への正しい使い方
「何をしているの?」と聞かれたら、だいたいの場合、自分が今何をやっているかを答えます。
普段
「I’m on Facebook」(フェースブック使ってる)
または
「I’m making dinner」(晩ご飯を作ってる)
などで答えますね。
でもこれをそのまま言うと、自分のことを若干偉そうにしている感じがします。
ですから、フレーズの表面的な意味に答えるのではなく、
挨拶である「コトバの本質」として使って
決まった表現で答えます。
素直にそのまま答える前に、ちょっとした「自己謙遜」を言っておくことが多いです。
アメリカ人がよく言うのは、
Not much
もしくは
Nothing much(別になにも)
です。
そのあと、自分が何をやているかを伝えます。
Not much, just reading a book.
Not much, just shopping.
Nothing, just on Facebook.

いつも
“Good!”と答えていました(^_^;)
