I mean, if you just learn English but you can’t use it, what’s the point?
なので 新しい ポッドキャスト を スタート する ため に 最初 は 新しい シリーズ を 紹介 し たい と 思い ます。 実際 に 使える 英語 力 を 身 に つけ て 世界 に 飛び出せる ため の 必要 な 考え方 を 学べる シリーズ です。
And so to kick start this new podcast, I’m going to start with a new series. It’s a series where you will learn the mindset of not just learning English, but be able to actually use it.
今回 の エピソード は 日本人 が 英語 を 学ん で も 話せ ない 理由 について 話 し たい と 思い ます。
And in this episode, I want to talk about why Japanese people learn English but they can’t speak. Are you ready? Let’s get started.
まずは この 理由 を 発見 し た ストーリー を 先 に 紹介 し たい と 思い ます。 実は 僕 は 英語 を 勉強 し て いる 日本人 の 多く と 同じ よう な こと を 経験 し て い まし た。 僕 は 日本語 を 勉強 し て 最初 の 4 年間 は 教科書 17 冊 を 買っ たり ポッドキャスト を 聴い たり マンツーマン レッスン を 受け たり し て い まし た。 毎日 2 時間 以上 日本語 を 勉強 し て い て 合計 1 千 時間 以上 日本語 を 勉強 し て い まし た。 毎日 新しい 文法 新しい 単語 新しい フレーズ に 出会っ て とても 刺激 的 な 時期 でし た。
You know I’ve actually experienced something that lots of Japanese people learning English have experienced too. When I first started learning Japanese for the first four years I bought seventeen textbooks. I listened to podcasts. I took one on one lessons every week. Every day, I studied for about two hours in total. I studied for about a thousand hours. Every day, I was learning new grammar, new words, new phrases. It was a really stimulating time. It was a very exciting time.
そこで ようやく 日本 に 行く こと に なり まし た。 日本 に 1 カ月 ホームステイする こと に なっ て とても ワクワク し まし た。 僕 が 日本 に 行っ て ホスト マザー と 直面 し たら どう なっ た ん でしょ う か。
and then I had a chance to go to Japan. I was going to do a home stay in Japan for one month. I was super excited. And what do you think happened when I met my host mother?
クニーチーワー。アーサー です。 よろしく お願い し ます。 それ しか 話さ なかっ た です。
That’s the only thing that I could say
え？なぜ でしょ う か。 アーサー そんなに 勉強 し た のに なぜ 話せ なかっ た の でしょ う か。
But Arthur you studied for four years. Why couldn’t you speak that much.
なぜ か と いう と 実は 僕 が 日本語 を 勉強 し て も 話せ ない 理由 は 多く の 日本人 が 英語 を 学ん で も 話せ ない 理由 と 同じ でし た。
Actually the reason why I learn Japanese but couldn’t speak is the same reason why Japanese people learn English but they can’t speak. Let’s look at the reason together.
これ が 理由 です。 英語 の 知識 は ある ん です けど その 知識 を 活用 する 能力 が ない から です。
This is the reason： Japanese people have the information in their mind, but they don’t have the ability to use that information.
これ が 日本 の 従来 の 英語 教育 の 問題 です ね。 英語 を 知識 として 教え て いる ん です けど その 知識 を 活用 する 方法 は 教え て くれ ない です。 情報 が 足り ない わけ で は あり ませ ん。 英語 を もっと 勉強 する 必要 が あり ませ ん。
And this is the thing in traditional English education in Japan. They teach you information but they don’t teach you how to use that information. It’s not because you don’t know enough. You don’t need to study more first.
もし 僕 の 今 の 英語 の 部分 を ある程度 理解 し て いる 場合 は あなた の 英語 の 知識 は 実際 に 話す に は もう 十分 な ん です。
If you can understand at least a little bit the English parts that I’m talking about, you know enough English already to talk with people.
問題 は 知識 が 不足 し て いる 彼 じゃ なく て その 知識 を 活用 できる よう に なる 必要 が あり ます。
The problem is not information. We have enough information. We need to learn how to use it.
では どう やっ て その 情報 を 活用 できる よう に なる の でしょ う か。
How can you learn to actually use that information?
カギが 自転車 に あり ます。
The key is in riding a bike.
実は 英語 を 実際 に 話せる よう に なる 方法 は 自転車 に 実際 に 乗れる よう に なる 方法 と ほとんど 同じ です。
The key to learning how to actually speak English is the same way to learn how to actually ride a bike.
あなた は きっと 自転車 に 乗れる と 思う の です けど 具体 的 に どう やっ て 自転車 に 乗れる よう に なっ た の でしょ う か。 自転車 の 教科書 を たくさん 読み まし た か。 自転車 の 動画 レッスン を たくさん 見 まし た か。 自転車 の プロ に たくさん 相談 し まし た か。
So I think you know how to ride a bike but how did you actually learn how to ride a bike. Did you read a lot of books about bikes. Did you watch videos about bikes. Did you talk to a pro bike rider.
違い ます よ ね。 実際 に 乗っ て みる しか あり ませ ん。 あなた が 自転車 に 乗れる よう に なっ た きっかけ は 足 で ペダル を 踏ん で ハンドル を 手 で つかん で いきなり 跳ね て み て 前 に 進も う と し た こと です。 そう し ない 限り 自転車 の 感覚 が 身 に つき ませ ん。 自転車 に 実際 に 乗れる 能力 が 身 に つき ませ ん。
You didn’t do that right. You just started to write it. You put your foot on the brake, you put your foot on the pedals, you put your hand on the handles and you jumped and you went forward. If you don’t do that, you’ll never get the sense of riding a bike. You’ll never get the ability to actually ride a bike.
これ は 英語 と 一緒 です。 英語 実際 に 使える よう に なる カギ は さっそく 使っ て みる こと です。 実は 僕 の 場合 も これ が 原因 で 日本語 を 話せる よう に なれ なかっ た です。 たくさん 勉強 し た の です が 学習 の 環境 から 離れ て 人と 実際 に 話し て み なかっ た です。 なので 最初 は まったく しゃべれ なかっ た です が 実際 に 話し て みれ ば 見る ほど 自然 と 上達 し て 日本語 が 結構 早く 話せる よう に なり まし た。 1 カ月 しか 経たなかったです。
You know actually this is the and it’s the same thing with English they key to being able to actually speak English is to actually use it. And you know this is the reason why I studied Japanese but I couldn’t speak, I studied a lot but I never left that academic setting, I never left the learning setting and actually talked to people. That’s why when I first went to Japan, I could hardly speak. But as I tried to speak more and more, my Japanese improved really quickly. I learned how to speak in about one month.
英語 を 学ん で も 外国 人 の 直面 し たら 頭 が 真っ白 に なる 場合 は きっと これ が 原因 です。 僕 の 個人 的 な 経験 で は 英語 を 学ん で も 実際 に 話せ ない 日本人 の ほとんど は 学習 を 一旦 止め て 行動 し て 外国 人 と 実際 に 話し て み ない から です。
and if in your case you study English, but when you come face to face with a foreigner, your mind goes blank. I’m pretty sure this is the reason why. almost all the people that I’ve talked with who learn English but can’t speak it is because they don’t stop studying, take action and actually try and talk with people.
忘れ ない で ください。 英語 は 科目 で は なく 人 と コミュニケーション を 取る ため の ツール です。 その 用途 で 英語 を 使わ ない 限り 実際 に 使える よう に は なり ませ ん。
Remember, English isn’t a subject in school, it’s a tool for communication. And if we don’t use the tool for that purpose, we’re not going to be able to use it smoothly, naturally.
