新宿駅の新南口の近くでした。
妻と中央線を降りたばかりで、エスカレーターに乗ろうとしたら・・・
あるおじさんが現れて急に声をかけてきました。
It was at shinjuku station, near the south exit.
I had just gotten off the chuo line with my wife and were about to board the escalator,
when an old man comes out of nowhere and tries to talk to me.
ちょっとびっくりして、心臓がドキドキしました。
My mind freezes for a second, and I stop to look at him. My heart started beating a bit faster.
エー、ナリタ？
顔を見たら、日本人じゃないということが分かりました。
When I looked at the guy more closely, I saw that he wasn’t Japanese.

スペイン語だ！！
And he was speaking spanish!
３年ぶりのスペイン語を使うチャンスで、とてもexcitedでした！
I was so excited. It was my first chance to practice spanish in over three years!
「ご案内します」と簡単なスペイン語で言いました。
I spoke in simple spanish saying I will show him where to go.
自分の母語が聞こえたら、おじさんは笑顔になってスペイン語でペラペラ話しかけてきました。そして成田エクスプレスの券売機まで案内しました。
The mans face broke into a big smile when he heard spanish, and he started to speak to me a lot as I guided him to the place to buy tickets for the narita express.
しかし、何かが変でした。
スペイン語を話そうとしたら、日本語も出てきてしまいました。
But something wasn’t right.
As I was trying to speak more… Japanese came out instead.
エーっ、プエデスコンプラルティケットアこの機械、えっ、マキナ、ごめん。
単語を忘れてしまったり、説明が上手く出来なかったりしました。
するとおじさんの素敵だった笑顔が消え、混乱しているようでした。
I started forgetting words. Like explaining the time of the tickets and how to use it correctly.
The man’s smile disappeared and was replaced with confusion.
あっやばい！うまくいってない！
さらにスペイン語を話そうとしたのですが、
緊張してしまい、言葉がうまく出て来なくて、さらに混乱させてしまいました。
相手も少しイライラしているようでした。
I tried to speak spanish more, but as I got more nervous my spanish became even less understandable.
And the man’s face turned from blank to frustration.
そこで頑張ってこう聞きました。
I tried my best, and asked him
Entiende?
分かりましたか？
するとこう言われました。
no entiendo nada
全くわからない
最悪だ！
今でも新宿駅を通りかかるときにこの話を思い出してだじろいでしまうことがあります。
Even now, I remember that time as I walk through shinjuku and wince a little.
スペイン語を数年も勉強したし、メキシコに行ったとき友達のために通訳してあげたこともあります。
にも関わらず今ほとんど話せなくなってしまったのはなぜでしょうか？
What was the matter?
I studied Spanish for so many years, went to mexico and translated for my friends.
Why couldn’t I speak now?
最近、スペイン語を全然使ってなかったからです。
The answer is that I hadn’t used Spanish for years.
英語学習に当てはまることわざがあります。

That’s what happened with my Spanish. No matter how much I tried to speak, I couldn’t because I hadn’t practiced for a really long time.
