フランス語に由来する英単語はだいたい、堅く感じる理由

Delicious, good

「Beverage, drink」

「Automobile, car」

以上の単語のペアは、意味が一緒です。

でも意味が一緒なのに、片方の単語は堅く感じます。

それってなぜでしょうか?

元々の由来が違うからです。

「delicious, beverage, automobile」などの多くの英単語はフランス語に由来します。

フランス語は英語にとても大きな影響を及ぼしました。中国語が日本語に及ぼした影響と同じようなものです。

Why is it that some words, like delicious are everyday feel a little cold and hard?

It’s because they come from French.

Many words that come from french in English are like Japanese words that come from Chinese.

奈良・平安時代の日本は漢字を使い始めました。そのため漢語が日本に普及しました。現在では、同じ意味を伝える言い方が2つくらいあります。

1つ目はもともと日本語で、より柔らかく感じます。

2つ目は中国語に由来した言い方で、より堅く感じます。

In the Nara / Heian period, Japan started to use Kanji, and as a result many Kango came into the Japanese language. Now, there are two ways to say almost everything. One way is the Japanese way, which sounds more soft. The other is the Chinese way, which sounds more hard.

本を読む・読書をする

(映像を)撮る・撮影する

集める・収集する

英語でも同じようなことが起きました。

The same thing happened in English, too.

英語に影響を及ぼしたフランス語

中世のイギリスはフランスに征服されました。

French Influence in English

In the middle ages, England was taken over by France.

For about 300 years, the official language of English wasnt English, but actually French!

その結果として、300年に渡ってイギリスの公用語は英語ではなく、フランス語になっていました。

イギリス人にとって外国語であるフランス語の言葉は馴染みがなかったので、距離感があって少し堅く感じる言葉でした。

そのため、その当時の貴族やフォーマルな場面では英語の代わりにフランス語で話していました。

During that time, a lot of french words were used in formal or polite occasions. They were foreign words, so they originally had a feeling of distance in them compared to English words.

That’s why English speakers don’t eat “pig meat,” we eat “pork” (from the french porc)

Or, instead of “drinks” we say “beverage” (from the french fraiche).
Or instead of “fun” we Say “diversion” (from the french word divertire)

Or instead of “light” we say “illumination” (from the french word illumine)

フランス語に由来する英単語はだいたい、英語の単語より長いです。そのため、英語の長い単語はだいたい堅く感じます。

Not all words from french are colder or harder, but as a general rule this is how native speakers feel.

相手と仲良くなるために、短い単語を使えば良い

When you want to sound close, choose short words

いつもオススメしているように、相手と話す時に仲良くなることが一番大事なことです。そのために、英語に由来する短い言葉を使うのをオススメします。より柔らかくてフレンドリーに感じます。

When you want to show closeness with the other person (and I recommend that you do most of the time), I recommend you use the simple, shorter words. They tend to be originally english and sound softer.

距離感を置けば良いフォーマルな場面では、フランス語に由来する単語を使うのをオススメします。

In a more formal situation where you want to show distance with someone else, use the longer words based on french.

でも日常会話では、「would you like refreshments?」の代わりに「would you like drinks?」と言えます。

Instead of “would you like refreshments” you can say “would you like drinks?”

是非短いフレンドリーな言い方を使ってみてください!

  1. Thank you for writing your column in both Japanese and English. It’s so helpful for me and I found something new regarding expression differences between them.
