【Podcast Lesson 14:

When I first started having conversations with Japanese people, I noticed something really interesting to me.

And it’s something I noticed when I walked into a sushi restaurant in America for the first time.

It’s the fact that many Japanese people know the names of many more fish and plants than many western people.

When you go to a sushi restaurant in America, they have the Japanese names of the fish along with the English name.

There was just one problem – I didn’t know hardly any of the English fish names!

You had the common ones that everyone knew:

  • Maguro, Tuna
  • Shake, Salmon
  • Saba, Mackerel

しかし

but

  • Aji, horse mackerel?
  • Kohada, Gizzard Shad?
  • hokki-gai, surf clam?

There were so many items I had never heard about!

This may seem like an obvious ting to Japanese people, but I think its a pretty unique thing about Japan.

This is something that not many people know.

Even in my hometown, Boston, which is famous for seafood, many people do not know the names of many kinds of fish!

So, if you ever are introducing sushi to a foreign friend.

Don’t try to translate the name into English. They won’t know what you are talking about!

Instead, try to explain it. Try to give them an image of what kind of thing its. Let them imagine it in their mind.
