日本の大都市の、外国人が感動するあるコト【Podcast Lesson 13：文化】

今年の６月に、姉が東京を訪れました。東京、金沢、京都などのたくさんの場所を巡り、とても楽しかったです！

以前日本に来たことはあったのですが、日本に来るたびにあることに必ず感動します。

その「あること」ってなんでしょうか？

In June, my sister came to visit me and my wife. We went many places: Tokyo, Kanazawa, Kyoto – it was so fun!

She had been to Japan before, but every time she visits, she always notices one thing.

Can you guess what it is?

日本は大都市でもとっても綺麗！ということです。

It’s the fact that everything in Japan is so clean!

姉はニューヨークのブルックリンに住んでいます。人々が何より訪れたがる都市でしょう。でも実際に行ってみると特に日本の方が驚くことがあります。

ニューヨークって汚くて臭いところがたくさんあるということです。

My sister lives in New York City, in Brooklyn. She’s in the city everyone wants to visit! But, there’s one thing that many Japanese people notice about it:

It’s really dirty. And smelly.

これは、僕と姉が慣れていないことではありません。

僕と姉はボストン、バンクーバー、シアトル、フランクフルト、ヴェネツィア、ダブリン、ニューデリーなど世界中の都市に訪れたことがあります。世界の大都市には共通点が１つあります。道端がかなり汚いということです。

This isn’t anything new to me and my sister.

My sister and I have been to many cities in the world: Boston, Vancouver, Seattle, Frankfurt, Venice, Cape Town, Dublin, New Delhi, and the list gets larger every year.

ですから姉が東京を訪れたときも世界の大都市と同じようにある程度汚いという思い込みがありました。でも道端がすごく綺麗！でびっくりしました。

So, when my sister first came to Tokyo, we expected it to be like New York and many other cities in the world: dirty. But she was so surprised that it was so clean!

東京は世界のトップテンに入る大きな都市の１つですが、道端がとても綺麗、ポイ捨てがほぼないということに日本に来る外国人がいつも感動します。これは、僕の特に気に入っている日本の文化の１つです。日本の方はきっと当たり前だと思っているかもしれませんが、実は日本独特なことです。

The fact that Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world, and yet it is so clean is something that amazes many foreigners.

It’s definitely a part of Japanese culture that I really like!

And it’s another thing that Japanese people think is normal, but actually is quite special.

日本の都市がとても綺麗なのはなぜでしょうか？

Why do you think Japan is so clean?

その理由の１つは、外国人がびっくりして、少し不便に思うことなんです。

道端にゴミ箱がほぼないということです。

One of the ways that encourages the cities to be clean, though is something that is quite surprising to foreigners.

There are no trash cans on the street.

これはポイ捨ての対策ですが、外国人の観光客が初めて日本に訪れるとき予想外で困ることが少なくありません。僕も日本に初めて来たときコンビニで何かを買って食べた後・・・どこで捨てられるんだろう？もしかしたら家で？と不思議に思っていました。

This goes a long way in helping the city stay clean, but for people who are not used to it and not expecting it, it can be pretty tough.

When I first came to Tokyo, I bought something at a convenience store, and when I finished eating it, I was wondering where i should throw out my trash… at home?

僕の姉も東京に初めて来てゴミを捨てたかったとき僕に訊ねました。

「アーサー、これどこで捨てられる？」

「外にゴミ箱ないから捨てられない」

「へ〜ウケる！家に持って帰るわけではないでしょ？」

「ううん、そういうことだよ？」

姉は最初、冗談かと思ったのですが、家に持って帰らなければいけないなんて信じられないことだったのです。

My sister, when she first came to tokyo she had some trash one day and said “Arthur, what do I do with this? Take it home?” She said as a joke

But actually, thats exactly what you need to do.

I guess, you can’t have it both ways.

ちなみに、このフレーズをご存知でしょうか？Can’t have it both ways.

Do you know this phrase that I just said? Cant have it both ways.

どんなことでも、良し悪しがありますね。でもたまに、悪いところをなくして良いところだけが欲しいと思うときがありませんか？そんな場合「you can’t have it both ways」と言います。意味は「良いことを得るには同時に悪いことを受け入れるしかない。」です。日本のことわざの「二兎を追う者は一兎をも得ず」に似ていますね。

With every good thing, there is always some bad with it. But aren’t there times when you want only the good and not the bad? In that case, you can say “you can’t have it both ways”.

It means “you have to accept the bad with the good”

この場合は、姉は日本の綺麗な道端もそのままで、同時にゴミ箱もあって欲しかったのです。でもゴミ箱があれば道端が汚くなってしまいます。

In this case, my sister wanted to have the cleanness of Tokyo, but I want the convenience of trashcans in Tokyo. The problem is, if there are trashcans in tokyo, it will get more dirty.

She can’t have it both ways.
