【Podcast Episode 10:

Theres a store that you go to almost every week in Japan, that doesnt exist in America.

Do you know what it is? You may be surprised.

It’s bakeries!

There are almost no bakeries in the united states, outside of some big cities. And the few bakeries that do exist mostly serve stores, not individuals.

So actually, bakeries in Japan are really popular with American tourists.

There is another place in the world where there ARE bakeries though. Do you know where that is? Yep, Europe!

I grew up in Germany, and when I was a kid I remember going to the local bakery to get some bread or pastries. The style of Japanese bakeries originally came from Europe, particularly france, so there are a lot of similarities between Japanese and European bakeries.

But there’s a major difference between bakeries in Europe and bakeries in Japan. Do you know what it is? If you’ve been to Europe before, don’t give away the answer!!

Bakeries in Japan are self serve. But in europe, you tell the staff what you want and they pick it for you. There are no trays. No Tongs. And everything is behind the glass counter.

When I first experienced a Japanese bakery, i was so surprised! I saw the trays, I saw the tongs… was I supposed to put the items directly on the tray? Was it dirty? Should I get wax paper? Until very recently, I still felt strange getting my own bread at a bakery… something just makes it feel less clean.

But I do have the say, the variety at Japanese bakeries is amazing. There are so many types of items you can buy that don’t exist in many places. Here are list of some things that I saw for the first time at Japanese bakeries:

Melon pan

Mont Blanc

Caree pan

An pan

Just as a side note, my mom loves Curry pan. It was her favorite thing when she visited me in Japan.

What is your favorite thing to get at the bakery?

For me, there are too many, I can’t answer!

If you have an international friend who comes to Japan, be sure to take them to a bakery. They’ll love it! And make sure to teach them how to use the tray and tongs!
